5 Allergy and Asthma Triggers That Can Ruin Your Summer

Summer sends an invitation to get outdoors, but if you suffer from allergies or asthma, it’s not so easy to RSVP “yes.” A whiff of pollen can translate to watery eyes and wheezing, ruining an otherwise delightful day in the park. Fortunately, there are many ways to treat or avoid these five common triggers before they spoil your summer.

1. Mold

Mold grows quickly in high humidity, so it often thrives in late summer. While not all types of mold will trigger allergic reactions like coughing and shortness of breath, alternaria, aspergillus, cladosporium and penicillium are common culprits for summer breathing issues. If mold is triggering your allergies or asthma, keep windows closed and stay indoors when mold counts are high.

2. Bees and Wasps

Another allergy that can sneak up on you is a reaction to stinging insects. If you’re allergic to bees, wasps or hornets, you can experience some pretty scary symptoms when you get stung. Swelling of the face or throat, problems breathing and hives are some of the most common ways to tell you have an allergy. You can avoid stings by wearing long sleeves and avoiding perfume and bright colors. Your doctor may prescribe an epinephrine shot, sometimes called an epi-pen, to carry around just in case.

3. Grass Pollen

High pollen counts can spell disaster for easy breathing when you have allergies and asthma. Some of the grasses that trigger allergies in the summer include red top grass, orchard grass, Bermuda grass and bluegrass. Watch pollen counts and avoid grassy areas when the numbers are high. Staying inside on windy days is another strategy for avoiding an attack.

4. Summer Fruits

If you suffer from grass pollen allergies, you may also notice symptoms when you eat summer fruits. Apples, peaches, cherries, pears, mangoes and other summer fruits can create a cross-pollen effect and induce an allergic reaction. This is often called “oral allergy syndrome.” Symptoms are typically mild and non-dangerous, but you should avoid the offending fruits if they cause serious problems. A doctor can also give you an allergy prick test to determine which fruits you are allergic to.

5. Bonfire Smoke

Making s’mores around the bonfire is a great social bonding experience, but the smoke can trigger a serious asthma attack. If you want to participate in the fun but know that smoke hinders your breathing, be sure to sit upwind and away from the fire.
